Mullering an engine!

Postby POZE » Tue Jan 12, 2010 8:07 pm

Hello all
I thought id let you know how i managed to muller my nice clean engine!

Ive beeb rebuilding a nice 1200cc engine for the Karmann over the last few weekends - cost a bit obviously, but mostly the time to do it all was a lot.
I basically built a nice engine, installed it into the karmann and thought id just turn it over on the starter motor to make sure the flywheel didnt rub on the bellhousing (12v flywheel on a 6v gearbox). I heard a noise, so just kept the key on for a few seconds whilst we looked for the issue. I then examined the engine and turned it over by hand and saw that the inner dizzy shaft wasnt moving - it was seized solid - i then saw down the fuel pump hole that the metal on the crank end was mullerd!

Basically i hadnt yet fitted the dizzy, and clamped it in place, so when the engine was turned over, the inner dizzy shaft popped up, got stuck and mullerd the crank shaft end!

So i had to remove the engine again, i then called up a friend and he came along and took the engine and a faulty spare i had to repair them into one! bloody annoying and costly.

All from not bolting in the dizzy! lesson learnt though. Shame as it looked like a sweet engine. Poze
